I have been the secretary of my lodge for some time now. I actually enjoy it for the most part (except when I have to send out notifications of suspensions for NPD). Well, word must have gotten out of just how fabulous of a secretary I am! The secretary of another smaller lodge in our district has moved out of the district on very short notice and no one else in the lodge stepped up to take over. So as a result, I was asked (i.e. begged) to join their lodge as a multiple member and become their secretary.
How could I turn them down? On top of that.... The presiding DDGM is stepping aside and you will never guess who is his recommendation to succeed him? You get three guesses and the first two don't count! I have not received the official notification from the Grand Master, but in almost every case, the outgoing DDGM's recommendation is appointed. It is going to be a busy year!

I have a bumper sticker on my wall that says "GET INVOLVED. THE WORLD IS RUN BY THOSE WHO SHOW UP."
Sounds like this applies to you. It stands as a testament to your dedication and interest that you'd be approached for these offices. Congratulations and good luck. Bob Chadwick Treasurer, Palm Bay #397 Palm Bay, FL |

Hang in there, it will be a chore for sure, but like rchadwic said, the fact that you volunteered, is a testament to your dedication to the craft.
Jimmy Doolittle once said, there is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.
Best of luck, and if you need some help call me. We can have coffee sometime.

The title of this thread is "I am going to have my head examined."
Probably a good idea my Brother! Seriously though, congratulations and good luck! I hope you have an abundance of free time. |

The SOONER the BETTER to HAVE YOU HEAD EXAMINED.
I have been there and done it, and wished I'd had my head examined and learned the words NO THANK YOU. Having said that I know you will do your very best with each endeavor and I wish you well. |

This makes me glad I hail from Washington DC, Masonically speaking. There is no DDGM position to be appointed to. I too am Secretary of both my mother Lodge and a smaller Lodge. I joined before becoming Secretary, though....it is the German speaking Lodge.
I see you've been a Master of a Lodge though...so that puts you ahead of me.

The only foreign language lodge I have had the pleasure to visit was in Quebec where the entire meeting was in French. My high school French did not get me very far but fortunately most Quebecites (Quebecians?) also speak English. Whew!
In our jurisdiction, the secretary and treasurer are generally offices held by more "senior" brothers who have already sat in the East. These offices are usually held for life... or as long as you want the job. It is not unusual to see secretaries and treasurers who have held that office for over 25 years!

Well congratulations again, and GOOD LUCK I don't know how you're going to balance being the Secretary of not one, but TWO lodges, AND be the DDGM. As I said before...I hope you have an abundance of free time...
don't forget to make that appointment to get your head checked. Edited by Adept? - July/19/2015 at 1:28am |

Thanks for the good wishes!
The two lodges where I am secretary meet on alternate Thursdays and are only about 5 miles apart so I already know most of the members of my "new" lodge since we visit each other often. My home lodge has 96 members and my 2nd lodge has 75 so its not a huge number to manage. As far as being DDGM, there are only 7 lodges in my district but it covers a pretty wide geographic area with the 2 furthest lodges being about 53 miles apart! As far as the job itself, that remains to be seen!
