    Posted: March/27/2008 at 1:53pm
I've become interested in the Grotto (I came across the DVD "Three Gifts of the Grotto") lately, and wondered how strong the order is, of late. I noticed there is no MOVPER section here on the forum, so I asked in the general forum hoping to find someone with first-hand knowledge.

I know that their membership numbers were hit pretty hard during recent years (as have all fraternal orders), but seem to be hanging in there OK from what I can tell.

Can anyone give me some more info than I can find on the http://www.scgrotto.com/ website?

We don't have a Grotto here in Raleigh, NC (closest ones are 3 hours away) so I would even consider joining and getting a charter for one here in Raleigh if the interest would support it, if the requirements could be met, of course.

I'm interested in the othe rMasonic Bodies, of course, but MOVPER seems to have a certain allure that I need to investigate right now.

Thanks!

I have been interested in MOVPER Grotto for some time. (I am in Iraq). The nearest Grotto to my USA residence is in Fredericksburg VA. Grotto is popular in several areas around the USA (Indianapolis has a very active chapter). I especially like their charity, providing dentistry to handicapped children (and adults). I would like to learn more about the organization, and their ladies' auxiliary "the Daughters of Mokanna".

I have spoken with the office manager in the Supreme Council Grotto, and she was very receptive. She is sending me information on forming a Grotto in Raleigh, as well as provided me the contact info of a Brother who established a new Grotto about 1 years ago (in a town a few hours away).

Their philanthropy is very heartwarming... "Special Smiles for Special Kids" (dentristry for handicapped children - many need anesthesia even for routine cleanings), Muscular Dystrophy, Special Olympics, etc. All Masonic philanthropy is wonderful, these just happened to really impact me when I learned more about them.

From my understanding, they are not necessarily large groups (can be), but tend to be very tight knit. They do have ceremonies for initiation, but do not confer Masonic degrees - it is about fellowship, being positive & optomistic, and having fun.

Similar to The Craft, one must inquire to join... 2B1ASK1. It is open to MM.

I'll keep everyone abreast of the progress.

Perhaps the moderators could create a sub-forum for the GROTTO.

If anyone is interested, I got an information packet in the mail from Supreme Council Grotto. It was very informative, and I was also furnished with the contact info for another brother that recently went through the steps of starting a new Grotto (about 3 hours away).

It's a straightforward process - the first step is, of course, to develop a committee to help with the collective legwork. Aside from the necessary documentation to petition for a charter, one must also gauge interest in forming the organization overall.

I will send out an introductory letter and plan a social get-together inviting Brethren from the local lodges in my (and immediately surrounding) Masonic Districts next.

Greetings Brethren,

I joined due to this thread. The Grotto was the first body I joined after being raised. and I greatful I did. I am currently Monarch (presiding officer) of El Rey Grotto in Ohio www.mastermason.com/elrey and have recently announced my canadacy for The Ohio Grotto Association officer line in the position of Sentinel. www.ohiogrotto.com our charity can by found at www.hfgrotto.org where you can make a donation of any amount to The Humanitarian Foundation to support our Dental Programs. I am excited to see that you are trying to start a new Grotto. I had the priviledge of sitting with one of the Members of the newest Grotto which is in NC and is the one you refer to at our 2007 Supreme Council Session.

I wish you the best of luck and please let us know if you do start a Grotto- all of my contact info can be found on the El Rey webpage listed above.

Good Luck!!!
In Good Fellowship

Brother Jim,

Thank you for the words of encouragement - another Brother and I have been meeting to form the nucleus of the committee to petition for dispensation.

I was misinformed, I believe - Prophets may solicit membership - they are not subject to the ancient craft landmark prohibiting invitation to join Blue Lodge.

In the meanwhile, I have contacted the secretary of Nubia Grotto in New Bern, NC - they just established their Grotto 1 year ago and his advice and support was well recieved.

Exciting times are ahead!

Thanks to everyone for their interest and support - I will continue to keep the Brethren updated.

yes you are correct we can solicit membership, We infact have a Master Mason Night where we do just that. This year my Grotto's MM Night will be privledged to have the Grand Monarch Bob Pool attending, as well as the Deputy Grand Monarch Pierre Shawver on July 12th 2008 at Oberlin Inn in Oberlin Ohio if you or anyone wishes to attend we have a block of rooms held under "El Rey Grotto" there. www.oberlininn.com , The rooms are 89.00 a night and any sitting Monarch and his Lady will eat for free. All other Prophets dinner will be 25.00/person.
When you do institute please let me know as I would love to make the drive there to see it.

You should also contact the Supreme Council office at www.scgrotto.com and ask for some pocket petitions nifty little trifold cards that fit in your wallet just like a biz card invented by PGM Bernie Mitchell.

Again good luck brother and keep us informed!

Brother Jim,

Thank you so much for sharing the news of our efforts!
I visited the El Rey site the other day and found it a great resource!

I appreciate the links, too.

The Hyperbaric Center looks like a great contribution to fighting the insidious conditions some of these children are striken with. I have found that some of the brightest spirits are in the children that have special needs.

Brother Dustin,

I am more then happy to help in anyway I can and I am sure our Grotto will be aswell.

again Good Luck, we had an official visitation to our local DeMolay Chapter last night, this is an excellent tool to show our support to the youth bodies and to promote the Grotto. El Rey presented a gift to the Chapter and if they have 10 Master Masons attend a regular meeting one of the boys will recieve his Masonic Attendance Merit Bar, we presented the gift to the Master Counciler and then informed their newest member that he will recieve the Merit Bar.

We had an amazing turn out with 14 Prophets and 25 total Master Masons in attendance, which means a 2nd Merit Bar will be to another boy.

Each of the 11 non-Grotto Masons left with an idea of what our Grotto wants to do and a Pocket Petition in his pocket. If only one of those Masons decides to join our Order we will be thrilled!

There will be a picture up on the El Rey site shortly, I am glad you found our site useful and you may read about the visitation now.

Here's the update:

We were trying to get a list of lodge mailing addresses from our Grand Secretary (not listed in the lodge directory, not always published on websites, and some lodges do not have websites) , but were instructed to inform the Grand Master of our intentions first - he warned us that the GM may not be too receptive to the formation of another appendant or concordant body in his Jurisdiction... he was right.

The concern is that another body may attract MM from other bodies already in existance - principally, York and Scottish Rites and the Shrine. I do not disagree with his concern, but I do have a different perspective.

I feel that adding a Grotto in central NC will give MM more opportunities to get involved. Perhaps it may afford a way to interract that would otherwise be wasted watching TV or doing something less productive. We're not forcing anyone to join. Additionally, there are already 2 Grottoes in NC, they are just not close to one of the major population centers in the state. The Shrine, York and Scottish Rites will attract members just as they always have. The Grotto is not known to be a financially expensive endeavor - quite the contrary. There is nothing that precludes a MM from being a member in addition.

The bottom line is that Grand Lodge of North Carolina will not support or endorse our efforts, but The Code prevents them from barring us to proceed.

I am not resentful to our Grand Master for his decision - I met him during our District Grand Visit hosted by our lodge, and he's quite affable and a good man. I'm a little disappointed that he feels this way, but it's certainly his perrogative.

We will contact each Lodge Secretary directly to get their mailing address and we will send out our letters of introduction.

To keep harmony and confusion down I would contact your GL and ask them first.

Sorry It's been a while since I posted -

First off yes Blue if your Grand Lodge is Recognized by the International Grand Masters Conferance you can join the Grotto - PHA is recognized while PHO is clandestine.

We had a local Grotto approached by a PHO member whom we had to turn away but a PHA member would be more then welcome and seeing as PHA does not have Grotto I believe Grotto could be the first step to a real uniting (not merging) of the PHA and "European" Grand Lodges and Brethren. Also if you inform me where you are located I can point you to the correct people in your area.

Dustin - Its a real shame what happened with your Grand Master, perhaps you could inform him of what the Grotto situation is in Ohio www.ohiogrotto.com we have 26 member Grottoes in the OGA (at least 20 in Ohio) and none of the other bodies suffer at all.

The other point your Grand Master should not concearn himself with how other appendent bodies are effected in fact it is no business of his at all how this would effect other bodies, his only concearn should be "would this organization be of ANY benefit to the Masons in my jurisdiction" if the answer is Yes as I believe it is, he should be happy to support you.
