Here is the bigger issue,,,the RAM is now on back order. So I realized that, when the box showed up with only one stick, that I needed another stick on the 29th. I called today to find out what my FEDEX tracking number was and was told about the backorder. What to do? I have called and called and talked to a "Manager" who tells me 7-10 days from the time it is available. What to do? Dont say sale the machine, I have heard that one from by little brother. I have considered taking it out back for some target practice, but that would only make me feel better momentarily. What to do? |

BUMP
An update...I talked to a manager on Monday who told me that my RAM was on back order and should be there in 7 - 10 days. Then this morning, I get a call from Acer (who bought Gateway) saying that my order needed to be redone.
Somewhat upset at this point. Nothing I can do, they have me by the "short and curlies".

check with Crucial.com, ebay, but your real solution should be take the gateway out back for shooting practice then head to your nearest apple store and get a Mac....

Gateway comp usually has proprietary boards & parts. Meaning they are hard to get replacements outside of Gateway. But the memory cards are not! Call or check MemoryMan and their website for new memory cards. What type of memory cards do you have? I don’t think memory cards are required to be in pairs since the older PC100/133 cards. The new longer cards are essentially two cards on one stick. Now I think Gateway telling you that you have to buy two cards is because they do not stock the bigger single memory sticks and are trying to sell two smaller sticks to match your memory requirements. Again a tech at MemoryMan should be able to clarify this for your. |

Thanks Max, I eventually got both sticks of RAM and that did not fix the problem.
The problem still remains; I can not shut it down normally, which means the only way to do a shut down is to press and hold the power button. I can not do it using the start/shutdown functions.
That problem along with it randomly freezes. No mouse movement, no screen saver, no Ctrl/alt/delete. It just freezes in place and will stay like that until I do a hard shut down.
Its not getting hot (I can hear the fans going) and the hard drive was just replaced because it locked up a month earlier.
Any suggestion would be nice.

While this could be a hardware problem, it's not likely since windows is freezing too. Some program is miss-behaving and hanging in an IO mode. Most likely a virus.
I use "Spybot Search & Destory", "adaware" and "Solo Antivirus" Download these to a directory on the comp. and install Spybot and Solo. You may need to download the manual update for Solo too. Start running both of these. FIX any problems found by Spybot and DELETE anything found by Solo. When finished restart the comp in Safe Mode and run the two programs again. Press and hold F8 while restarting. When finished restart the comp and install Adaware, update and run it. Also, try to connect to Trendmicro's website and run the free virus check there. I find that some viruses have a guard program to hide them or reinstall the virus if deleted. So these seem to come off in layers and your will have to run Spybot, adaware and Solo several times. Give me a call (229-377-2558), it might be easy by phone to explane. Max Edited by edwmax - August/15/2008 at 4:07pm |

OH! BTW. Some of these viruses when you mess-with-them, they will screw up windows. You will have no choice but to re-install windows. So backup "my documents" first.

dustoff-00. you say its not getting hot. even though your cpu fan might be working. you might try blowing out the heatsink that the fan is on. if that gets dust buildup it won't let the heatsink work properly and the fan can not disapate the heat fast enough. my system at home was doing the same thing. how ever my system is over 7 years old. and i think the heat has got to the cpu and mother board. basicaly time to build a new system. oh and Lord macVader i know what your going to say..lol. but i'm a linux running. so basicaly we run cousin OS's .lol.

hamnoble, I for one use Linux a lot, I have and use XANDROS OC, Ubuntu 9.04, SUSE 9.3 Pro. I have 2 laptops and 3 desktops running these three different Linux programs and I have to say the desktops are only down when we loose POWER. I use the laptops and they travel with me so they do get shut down. And of cource this Dell with Vista on it I have it for the Games. GTA ( all of them ) Need for speed ( all of them ) and combat flight sims ( to many to type out ). Brother Lord MacVADER, I have used Mac and can not argue that Apple makes a great computer, the Media is un-matched by any other ( even the Linux, but it is very close ). However I still like the PC with Linux over Apple. PC's parts are cheaper to purchase and upgrades are just too easy. I'm not saying MAC is hard but not as easy to find and get ( as the PC parts ). I know there are MAC stores I used MacMall and understand it isn't really that hard to find parts but you have to admit the PC parts are everwhere ( even Wall-mart ). Have you used Windows or a Linux OS? If so, why did you choose the MAC? If the multi-media was the issue I understand, but just getting on-line and running spread sheets and word processing you could have saved a ton of $ on a pc with Linux. Sun software is giving away the complete Open Office Suite. It is FREE for Windows or Linux. I have it and use it. I also have MS Office Suite 2007 and use it... I guess I'm not a Loyal Linux user after all. But I do like it over Windows.Well that is my thoughts on it. I hope it makes sense to you. Take care, Have a great day, Be good if you can and God Bless! Larry L. Collins Riddle Lodge #315 East Liverpool, Ohio |

The Reason for being a Mac Nazi ( thats what my Boss Calles me)...I am a graphic designer... not a spread sheet guru.. and I currently have 6 macs including a lisa 2 still working.... parts are not that hard to find. They are all over Ebay in fact i have rebuilt 4 old mac towers for a lot less than I could have bought used.... Mac also hold there resale value very well. I just sold a used imac that my logic board died.... I pulled the hard drive and memory... it sold not working... no keyboard or mouse... no memory or hard drive... dead logic board for 300.00... tryed to sale a friends PC dell.... I could not even get a bid of 10.00....and now I have 2 macs with the intel processor and one of those i am running windows on.... Windows software runs a lot better on a Mac than any PC hard ware....honest i have never tried Linux .....thats where i stand on that. I run Office 08 on my mac...so in case I do need office I have it...but really have never had to use it...I manily use the high end Graphic soft ware... the 1800 dollar stuff and higher,

Brother Lord MacVader, I would never a call Mac user a Nazi. A graphic designer... Your profile picture is a great example of your talent, you make it perfectly.
You said it your self " I pulled the hard drive and memory... it sold not working... no keyboard or mouse... no memory or hard drive... dead logic board for 300.00... " This is what I was trying to say PC's are cheaper and easier to get! the old supply and demand thing, there are hundreds of PC to every one MAC. The " intel processor " I stick with the AMD myself! intel is ok, but I think they are still to buggy for the $. You keep up the good work ( even if it's on a MAC ). Ha Ha ![]() |

You are welcome Brother. We both agree we do not wish to go back! Maybe I just did not keep the Mac long enough to truly judge it ( that was many years ago...). I have not used a Mac in at least 15 years and I know they too have came a long way. I have worked on them lately and this is how I found the macmall online store just for the Mac's, and the parts do cost more then PC parts. ( if you wish to compare apples to Apples ) ( that sounded better [ funny ] in my head.... ) ![]() Take care Brother, God Bless! Larry |

Brothers; Lord MacVader & mm00re, I hear ya! I think if I did get a Mac it would still be running Linux!
Maybe not... I just know I love the Linux os ( I don't care which one ). But... I do have to say and said it has been many years past that I played with a Mac. I will tell you this, when I get the chance to use a Mac I will! ( and will let you all know what I think then. )![]() Brother mm00re, have you used a Linux os? If so what do you think about it? Yeah I started out on unix system V, then moved to Redhat linux 5, I am currently considering using Free BSD but I have also been looking at Ubuntu. I like the operating system but just wish there was a lot more mainstream support for it. It's not my primary OS by any means but I do enjoy tinkering with it. |
