Having just read "PalmettoBug's" excellent article on the oldest Lodge in the Western Hemisphere, I'd like to know from our members how much they know about their Lodge.
Call it knowledge.
How old is your Lodge and what History is attached? If you don't know............ask the brethren in your Lodge.
Most of the members here are from USA, therefore I would have to venture to say, that there would be some very interesting history due to the fact that there were many Lodges and members at the time of the Civil War.
I, for one, would be very keen to read and learn about the experiences of these Lodges.
Many of the Lodges established in the US were well in existence before the discovery of Australia which occurred in 1771. Palmetto's article related to Lodges formed in 1733/1734.
Kind of scares you huh?

My Lodge, is not an old Lodge and it was "Charted" in 1947 and currently there are 3 other Lodges that use the same building.  As for the history side........that's still being investigated, but I do know with certainty that the building has State Heritage accreditation, which means that there are very strict regulations as to what work can be done to the building and any work done must be in accordance with the period.

We have three lodges in Huntsville, AL. Helion Lodge #1, the oldest in Alabama, Solar #914 and Apollo #921. Solar formed after Helion grew so large that it would have taken 20 years to go through the chairs. They initially met in the local Scottish Rite Temple. They moved out after disagreements with the Scottish Rite. Apollo then formed and began meeting in the SR Temple. I attend Apollo, which is heavily Scottish Rite.

From my lodge's website:

Apollo Lodge No. 921 Free and Accepted Masons is the youngest of Huntsville's three Masonic Lodges. The light of Freemasonry first appeared in Alabama at Huntsville in 1811, when the Grand Lodge of Kentucky authorized the creation of the forerunner of Helion Lodge No.1. Over the years, as Huntsville changed from a small town to a major city, it became obvious that one Masonic Lodge was no longer sufficient to serve the brethren of the community. Thus, our sister lodge, Solar No. 914 was created in 1962. Five years later on August 12, 1967, Apollo Lodge No. 921 was instituted. The name recalls Phoebus-Apollo, the god of Light in classical mythology, who illuminated the world, warmed the pastures and brought forth fruit of the earth.

The Carrington Lodge (WAC 363) was consecrated in 1998. A mere infant.

I'm pretty sure that the first Masonic Lodge in Western Australia, the Lodge of St John, dates back to 1843.

We have a number of Lodge histories in our GL Library, all written by enthusiastic Brethren. They make fascinating reading - let's not forget that their history is our history too.

my mother lodge is 1805, the first lodge here in Cambridge, ma.
the second lodge I joined is 1869, formed in what we call North Cambridge, Ma
the third lodge I joined is 1867, formed out of the first lodge just after the Civil War, typical
of the times, overflow caused this lodge to form.
the fourth lodge I joined is 1863, formed in Harvard Square, that is the home of Harvard,
they are a Civil War lodge
the fifth lodge I joined is 1867, from Boston, named after the Earl of Zetland, Grand Master
of the Grand Lodge of England
the sixth lodge I joined is new, 1995, all Spanish speaking lodge, the first in Massachusetts
the seventh lodge I joined is 1854, a small rural lodge, this and the first Lodge went through the Morgan Affair, both went into darkness, but since the seventh lodge never turned its Charter in and owed GL money they could not in 1854 reclaim its original date, which would have been 1777.
the eighth lodge I joined is 1920, the first university lodge in the US, connected with MIT
in order for histories I do not think there is enough of room on here to post, but I am writing the History of FreeMasonry in the City of Cambridge for our builidngs 100th coming up in 2011.
i remain fraternally yours

Started in 1856 as Alma #39 of the Moderns. When the ancients and moderns amalgumated it was renumbered Alma #72. The name Alma came from the battle of Alma in the Crimean war, which some of the original members were in.

My Lodge Polar Star #114 will be 146 years old this year.
It was constituted May 8 1863 after the members of Solar Lodge #14 deemed that another lodge was needed in the city after membership grew.  Solar Lodge was originally granted a charter by the GL of Massachusetts on 10 Sep 1804.  The two lodges (Polar Star and Solar) still share the same lodge building today.

Balmoral Lodge #185
St. Albert, Alberta, Canada,
AF&AM - Grand Register of the Grand Lodge of Alberta

- Constituted 12 September, 1962.

So we're fairly young in relation to other lodges in our jursidiction and across the rest of Canada.  The word around the hall is that a few of the brethren from St. Albert who were members of Dominion Lodge in neighbouring downtown Edmonton decided that St. Albert should have it's own lodge.  The story goes that three of the brethren lived on the same street in St. Albert, it was called Balmoral Drive.  And that's how it got it's name.

For mine:
Valley Lodge No. 499 (District: 59 - Region: 7) was constituted on Thursday, December 28th, 1871 in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Most of the original members were employed by
the Lehigh Valley Railroad, thus the name of Valley Lodge was agreed upon.

We are pretty young at State College Lodge No. 700.  We were first warranted in 1920.  It was formed by members of two nearby lodges Bellefonte Lodge No. 286 and Old Fort Lodge No. 537.  We moved into our current building in March of 1942 and have met there since.

I see some brothers from PA using the # sign in front of their Lodge number. Interesting bit of trivia. Did you know that the GLoPA frowns on using the # sign in front of their Lodge numbers? They recommend using No. instead.

And no, I have no idea why.

Now that's interesting, Sphinx. Also interesting that when you click on a Lodge it shows it as No., not #. But when I was laying out our website I was told I must use No. and never #.  Ah, the mysteries of Masonry! :)

Instituted: October 11, 1965
Chartered: April 20, 1966
We split off from a lodge that grew too large (Hiram #40) and are dedicated to a very active Mason in the area, James B. Green.

Our lodge building was built (with the exception of the concrete slab in the fellowship hall and roof on the building, which were subbed out for various reasons) entirely by Masons, and mostly members of the lodge at the time.

My lodge was chartered in October 1857. From the stories I have heard the building survived a F4 or F5 tornado that hit Gainesville and the downtown square where the original building was located in 1936. The building then burnt down in late 1950s. The lodge then supposedly met in the basement of a bank for several years then moved in its current building somewhere around 1960-63. I am not sure of the exact date.

The oldest lodge in Georgia is King Solomon's Lodge #1 in Savannah and it was started by Gen. Olgethorpe under direction of the United Grand Lodge of England until the Grand Lodge of Georgia was formed. It just celebrated its 275th year on Feb. 21, 2009.

We have held the highest new membership award issued by the Grand Lodge three years running. Our current class has 23 candidates. PM Beck and PM Patton hardly ever miss a meeting. Thank God for these Brethern..................

I am working - though not at very steady pace - on the history of my Lodge. It was chartered in 1869 and I have laid eyes upon its first annual return to our Grand Lodge. Dues in those days were three dollars a year, which was big money back then. For example: $3 in 1913 (the furthest back the federal government's on line inflation calculator goes back) would be worth $64.30 today. The Lodge did not build its own Lodge Hall until 1965. Prior to that, the Lodge rented various spots over the years. Members of my Lodge were instrumental in founding our county almost ten years after the chartering of the Lodge and some of those same members formed the original commission of the county - which may explain why the Lodge met in the new (new in 1879) county courthouse on some occasions. I think we were part of that NCO (New County Order). LOL

Side note: 1913 is the year that the Federal Reserve System was stood up. Hmmm.

Triluminar was chartered in 1819 in Va. It wasn't until after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on March sixth, 1871 that Triluminar moved under the jurisdiction of WVa. Our home of Jefferson county along with the State of Virginia held that the county belonged to Va and not West Va. We lost.

As a personal note a great many of us living in the eastern panhandle believe we should still belong to Va. Charleston loves to take our money but ignores us the rest of the time.

Thank you MikeS. for this info. This is the type of information that should be posted here as just short one liners really do not display or educate the members here, the trials and tribulations regarding "times of Lodges".
1871.........that's an old Lodge.
Not too many lodges here in Oz have a starting point like that.

Just on a side note...the reason for the names of Lodges is interesting too, because there is a significant reason as to why the name was chosen.
My Lodge "Ilyarrie" was named after a certain type of wattle that grows over here.
I may even start ANOTHER thread asking "Why/how  your Lodge obtained it's name.

Freemasonry is VERY interesting and no stone should be left unturned in learning..... why.
