My Lodge has put me on a committee to check out mobility assistance for our elderly members.  We're looking into a small elevator or a stair lift.  The stair lift would be the most economical in purchase, installation, and maintenance in my opinion.  Our staircase is "L" shaped and has a landing.  We're also looking into a small elevator, but it would have to built outside the Lodge and would likely incur brick work, pit excavation, etc.  If your Lodge is multi-storied, how do ya'll handle this issue?  We'd hate for an elderly member to stop attending Lodge or Eastern Star just because they can't navigate the stairs.  For a 2 story building, what is the cost for elevator (along w/ maintenance) verses a stair lift?  Help me out here, please!

As you well know, my brother, Apollo has a stair lift to get folks from the main level (where the lodge room is) down to the fellowship hall in the basement. While I'm sure it is much more economical than an elevator, it is also much more frightening. We have had elderly brothers (and their wives) struggle to get up and down the stairs out of fear of that stair lift. I don't know if it is actually dangerous, but so many of them are afraid to use it.

Of course, elevators can also be terrifying. (Try getting stuck in an elevator in Jerusalem with a horde of scantily clad teenage Israeli girls. True story.) This is especially true if the elevator is constructed cheaply.

We had a chairlift installed a couple of years ago that goes along the handrail attached to the wall and it's very, very good as it does not block the stairway whatsover.
If you'd like, I can get you details and model etc and it has a stop/start button...top and bottom of the stairs.

Some good basic information on this vendor's site: http://www.tkaccess.com/stair-lift/

Our lodge is 2-story.
The upstairs entry (to access Lodge room) has a ramp along with stairs, and the downstairs entry (to access Fellowship Hall) has a ground-level door. It's not real convenient in inclement weather, but a workable solution that was also cost-effective.

Does anyone know the cost of the lift (ballpark)? This looks like something that we can use in our lodge...

I've found a site that lists a new stair lift for around $1,700 not including installation (an additional $500, or DIY).  This lift has a "soft" start and stop, so it won't scare the bejesus out of the rider.  If I'm not mistaken, the rail folds up and out of the way when not in use.  Can't remember the site, but if I find it again, I'll post it.

Well, I think we're probably going to go with a stair lift.  My research, however, is moot since I learned that whatever we put in will have to be commercial grade and not residential (insurance co. says so).  Whatever sites, suppliers, or prices we find, I'll post on here to help anyone out that needs the info.  We'll probably have to get an installer to come out and measure the staircase to get anything specific.

Fraternally,

Our current S.W. and I might make a trip up pretty soon.  PM me with your contact info if you will.  I'll get up with him and we'll figure out a time to come up to check out the lift.  That'd be wonderful!  Thanks.
