    Posted: November/02/2009 at 5:46am
I have an apron question, but first let me explain how aprons are given/worn in my Lodge.

As part of the EA degree, we receive a white leather apron. I think they might be changing that to where it will be given after the MM degree, but that's beside the point. This white leather apron is generally not worn in Lodge after that. Most people keep it at home (to preserve it) and when in Lodge wear one of the generic Lodge aprons (just white I think) which are kept and left at the Lodge. Officers wear special aprons of course based on their position.

My question is this. Can a MM buy his own MM apron (with a MM design he fancies) and wear that when in Lodge as a non-officer and when visiting other Lodges? Obviously, one should check with their Lodge regarding this matter, but I'm just wondering if it's something that can be done or is done by some Master Masons.

Over here in Oz(WA), there is a standard for ALL Blue Lodges.

EA.........Lambskin apron....no markings.

FC.........Lambskin apron....rosettes

MM apron.......lambskin......3 rosettes

WM apron......lambskin.........

Then there are GL aprons.............but will not go into detail.

Not sure how you do things in the US, but I personally think that 'anyone' who creates his own apron, is just trying to glorify his own artistic abilities.
Would really love to see a set standard in the US like Oz, Canada, England etc.

The EA and FC aproms are provided by the Lodge and are to be returned after each meeting by the wearer.

If they present me with a MM apron after the 3rd degree, I'd be happy to wear that. I'm not trying to be vain about it or stand out. It's just that I think we only receive the pure white lambskin apron of the EA and then otherwise use the "community" cloth Lodge aprons which seem quite worn and plain to be honest. Well, it's not a big deal within my home Lodge, but I guess I'd like something dressier than my EA apron when visiting other Lodges.

I was looking at something similar to this design.

P.S. Thanks for posting your Australian aprons. Interesting to see. Smile

I do not think any body would have a problem with that design. Would look very nice.

check with your GL constitutions and regulations and your lodge secretary.  Some jurisdictions have regulations on the size, color and additions to the apron.  Also some masonic regalia dealers know what each state or jurisdiction can wear.  You can always call your GL and ask the Grand Secretary or his office on your state or jurisdiction regulations if they have any on the topic of aprons.  Some just have regulations on the white and PM aprons.
good luck, personally I like the hand painted aprons that are now being produced, adds a touch of personality.

We use lodge aprons. Past masters are presented special aprons that they are free to wear, and as you mentioned, lodge officers were aprons decorated with their respective jewel of office/station. Our lodge has special aprons for visiting brethren so the rest of the members can make sure to introduce themselves and welcome the traveling man.

In MWPHGL of Il, we all wear white except, like the other brother said, the PM has their own and lodge officers have their own according to their office.

The Apron is a symbol of purity... but it's also there to remind us that we are all equal, that no matter who we are in the profane world, we are one inside the lodge. I understand your sentiment here, but I have to "warn" you that having an apron that stands out from the brethren, will be seen as vain...
The apron, same as the tools we use in lodge (and in real life hopefully), is there to teach us a moral lesson and to assist us in our work, which, we hope, will result at the end in climbing up the Jacob's ladder... it's not to make us feel good, look nice, or be special... Wink
Yes, our aprons here in the frozen north, are way "dressier" then the ones you have in US (ours are the same as in Oz), but all of us in the lodge have the same apron.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Not to be disrespectful, I am merely a FC and have much to learn, but is the apron truly a symbol of equality in the Lodge? If it is so, shouldn't the officers and past masters wear the same apron as the general membership? I've heard of it being a symbol of purity, innocence and the badge of a Mason, but this is the first I've heard of it in reference to equality. I thought it was the level that serves to remind us that we are equals despite our worldly wealth and honors or our "rank" within the Lodge. I am not trying to say you are wrong, just prodding a bit further on the topic for more discussion.

That being said, your point is well taken, and there's a good chance I'll just use the community Lodge aprons when in Lodge as a non-officer MM.

However, I will probably still check with my Grand Lodge to see the guidelines for obtaining my own MM apron (probably like the one I linked to) just to use when visiting Lodges out of state/country. I don't want to have to depend on them having an apron for me.

Also, I was appointed Chaplain for 2010 by the incoming WM, so I'll be wearing the Chaplain apron soon anyway.

It's the only "clothing" that is the same for everyone... in that sense - it's the symbol of equality.
On the other hand... the officers aprons - they are simply a mark of their service to the lodge.

Fair enough. I was just nitpicking for the sake of discussion I guess. Thanks for the advice. Smile

As Canuck stated, Canadian aprons are the same as those worn by the Aussies. To add to that, the MM and PM apron shown by tm274 are for a Lodge which is less than 100 years old. For a Lodge over a hundred the hardware changes to gold gilt, and a gold braid is added around the outside.
TM274, do you also change aprons after 100 years?

I haven't heard of any reason why there would be a change after 100 years as the aprons are under the laws of our GL and like UK and Canada, the same. Any change because of 100 years would be a massive cost all round.

I'm sure that one Lodge, in my area, was established around 1898(I will double check) and their apron is of the norm.

Wow, the aprons really vary from GL to GL. As EA you are given a plain white apron. That apron is worn throughout your life. Some people store and preserve it, some wear it, and some buy other aprons. Obviously, GL officers (ours are purple and gold accents) , and Lodge officers (Basic blue lodge apron)  have a little different look.

The only other apron we would wear in place of the white apron, assuming your not an officer of some degree, is this one.

Yeah, that seems to be the basic American design for many Master Mason aprons... white apron with blue trim, all seeing eye on flap and S&C on the apron. I'm leaning towards this one now as my "traveling apron" pending approval from my GL.

nice apron, design is taken from a plate that was produced around late 1860's to 1880's and was widely used.  We have a couple in our collection in cambridge, at the time the most common was just the S&C and G, and others as seen here with the all seeing eye.  Early styles of this apron, the S&C was stamped in gold leaf.

good luck with your quest!
