TURTLE CREED

Turtles are bright eyed, bushy tailed, fearless and unafraid folk with a fighter pilot attitude. They think clean, have fun alot, and recognize the fact that you never get any place worthwhile in life unless you stick your neck out. The "Turtles" are indeed an illustrious group and include in their membership ranks some of the country's foremost leaders in fields of government, finance, entertainment, aerospace and other areas where aggressiveness, a feeling for fair play, clean thoughts and a sense of humor are keys to success. Started by a group of test pilots during WWII, the club has progressed to its present position as one whose membership is diligently sought after and highly esteemed by those lucky enough to be initiated. Adherence to the creed and always giving the password when asked are the only responsibilities placed on our membership. You will find that life is more fun and takes on new meaning when you are a "Turtle". Welcome to the group.

I was out walking my dog near a local wild-life water pond, and we came across a long-necked turtle. My dog, Maxie, is not normally afraid of anything except the vacuum cleaner, was VERY respectful of this strange looking creature.

No, you dont have to be a mason.  Anybody can be a turtle, male or female.  You just have to be a person of good character.

Just like becoming a Mason.  2B1 ASK1.  Find a friend or a relative who is a Turtle and ask them about being a Turtle.  The will have a bunch of questions for you.  Answer those questions in the correct manner and viola, you're a Turtle.

Oh, and am I a Turtle? You bet your diabetic donkey I am!

yes the Turtles are another one of the thousands of Fraternities that do and did exist here in the US and around the world, just like the Owls, Elks, Moose, Lions, A&H Artill, The do gooders, Temperance, Sons of Temperance, Red Men(funny their degree work was done in native america costumes but native americans could not join) Woodmen of the World, Fof Locomotive Engineers, etc, etc, etc.

I've been trying to find someone I know who is a turtle so I could become one.

Someone on here offered to do it for me over the phone - something about that just didn't feel authentic.

What do you guys think?

Turtles dont have dues cards. You get a membership card after your initiation and it is good for a lifetime. They say any turtle can make you a turtle, but the way we do it back home is go to a turtle party and it becomes a group thing with Imperial Turtle conducting the initiations. YBYSAIA

Years ago, when I was going to university I became a turtle.  Over the years, I have misplaced or lost my card.  Does anyone know how to get a replacement?  At the present time, I don't know any fellow turtles.  I looked it up on the internet and it seems that the identifying questions have changed over the years.   Can anybody help?   Fraternally, Bill

Dear Brethren:

I am the Supreme Imperial Turtle of the Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles. While not a Masonic fraternity, we are often found in the Shrine, Tall Cedars, the Grotto, the Square clubs, etc., as a side degree. I myself have been brought to Light in Masonry, having been raised on April 22, 1985 in True Craftsman's Lodge No. 651 in the Fifth Manhattan District, F. and A.M.

We do not issues charters or dispensations, we do not have a constitution and by-laws, but we do utilize a ritual, have a grip, recognition sign and passwords and have been around since January 12, 1943, when my father established a semi-secret drinking fraternity during the Second World War while stationed in England with the 8th Army Air Force.

Here is a link to an article about us you may find online Masonic historical website that I regularly contribute to:

I have been a Turtle since March 1, 1980, when I was initiated into Turtledom by my late father in the SGT Joyce Kilmer Post No. 55 of the American Legion, Department of New York, and took over the mantle of leadership on December 4, 1990 after Dad suffered a stroke. I have conducted over 3,000 Turtle initiations and am convening a conclave of the New York Chapter on December 21, 2010 at The Australian Pub, a bar on West 38th Street in Manhattan, to initiate a USMC Major and an Army Major, along with a German Lieutenant Colonel assigned to the UN.

Remember, there are dozens of so-called Turtle clubs and orders, they're all pretty similar, but we're the only one that traces its roots back to the origin of Turtledom. We are more of a fun-and-honor type club, but we have numerous Chapters on college campuses that are doing service and charity work.

Sincerely and fraternally yours,

Bro. Denis P. McGowan
