So on the way home from Officers installation yesterday the Wife, Daughters and I were discussing what may come in the future. I told them that for a young man to get my blessing to marry one of my daughters he must first become a Mason. The wife thinks i'm nuts and that it is an unreasonable demand. What do you think?

If i thought the reason a man was petitioning for the degrees was to marry a Mason's daughter and to receive her father's blessing by doing so; I would consider that a 'mercenary' motive and MOST likely cast a Black Cube.

I hate to break it to you, but your daughter is going to marry the man she loves with or without your blessing! You can either accept your new son-in-law into your family or not. Its up to you.

Since you asked: Listen to your wife. A few additional reasons to those cited: our membership is based upon our voluntary choice; it is wrong to compel others; you have no say in who your daughter marries as this is a country which recognizes the rights of women; being a Mason is no guarantor of being a good man.

The thing I am wondering, besides the obvious is "Why" - that is, what were the specific reasons given for this condition? |

Having been married intermittently for the past 50 years, and having had some experience dealing with the female of the species for almost 3/4 of a century, I note that if I had been so bold as to make a demand like that, it would have been a guarantee of extremely rocky relations, if not actual physical damage to me.
Your wife and daughter know the territory much better than you do; she/they will pick a suitable mate for her, and I dare say that any lad who acquiesces to such a demand on your part would probably not make either a good husband, or a good Mason. Of course, you may get lucky and find a young Mason who your daughter finds satisfactory.... I hope so, and wish you all success in the hunt for a son-in-law. |

I would be more pleased if a worthy man married my daughter, and due to his positive impression of our fair fraternity petitioned of his own will and accord.
My principle concern would be that he love and care for my child as his spouse, not which organization he belongs to. Just my $.02
