I assume this is the the percentage of the male population of each respective state that are Freemasons? If so, Maine has the highest percentage with a whopping 1.40% Yea us!

Thanks for the info on Arkansas, I have been trying to find detailed data on membership gains and losses but have not been able to do so.
Here are some charts that provide an analysis of the data:

Thanks for the number and charts on Arkansas. I wonder what caused the big spike for NPD around 2000,2001. I have known for years that PA was always had a large number of Masons and we still continue to be the largest Masonic juridiction. Does anybody know why that is?

I would like to know what is Penn's secret as well. I lived in Philadelphia (suburbs) in 2000, and I got married just across the river in New Jersey. I visited many Penn lodges, and I found them all to be terrific. And in Philadelphia, I visited the Tall Cedars of Lebanon several times, they had a breakfast fund-raiser on Sunday mornings and I would stop off on the way to church.
One custom that (some)Penn lodges have, is that many lodges have a "souvenir". Every year (some of) the lodges will purchase a coffee cup with the lodge name on it, and have several hundred made. Each visitor is given one for free. Some lodges will have a souvenir plate or a souvenir mug made up with the lodge name on it. The items are given free to each visitor.

2000-2001 was the year the Shrine dropped the requirement for being a 32nd degree Scottish Rite or Knight Templar for their membership. Lots of hard feelings, and folks dropping off for awhile...

Pennsylvania is the sixth largest state population wise which which of course means they have a larger number of potential members, and they also have the sixth largest % of members out of that population.
In addition since 2002 (the oldest year MSANA has data available on their site) their % of loss has been less than the National average so their ability to retain members and/or bring in new members has exceeded the national average.
As far as what variables go into the lower loss %, I have no idea and doubt anybody can pin point specific causes due to the complexity of those variables.

There is something that I cannot understand, and I wish someone would explain to me, like I was a 4-year-old.
Why do most Masons look at the drop in membership, and conclude that everything in Masonry is just fine?

What I do not understand is why you assume that the decline in membership is due to what you perceive to be wrong with Freemasonry and most Masons, rather than face the reality that the decline in membership is driven by shifting demographics and major cultural and societal changes that began in the late 1950s. There are certain fundamental characteristics and beliefs that someone must hold before Freemasonry will attract them (Where were you first prepared to be made a Mason?) We do not proselytize, a man must come of his on free will and accord.

Gentleman, I will ask that you kindly not begin this same debate in this new topic. It has been debated back and forth, and at length in the "what would you like to see changed or improved" thread. Let us please remain on the topic of statistical data. If you wish to debate further please do so via private message

I wonder if population density impacts the level of involvement? In other words, is there a "critical mass" or a "tipping point" proportion within the population?
As demographics shift and change over the years in a state, it may also affect the numbers. So if a state is losing/gaining males of a certain age range, they may also be losing/gaining those people as potential members. Just a thought

Utah, the smallest constitution in the continental US (and possibly the smallest in the US due to dual memberships), has the smallest percentage change.

To what do you attribute this fact? I believe it is because the majority of men in the Beehive State, are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Although the Mormon church has no objection to men participating in Masonry (Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, and many of the early church men were Masons), the LDS church takes a great deal of a man's discretionary time.

I don't think the majority religious faith has anything to do with the Utah fraternity having the smallest change.
