He was elected Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite's Southern Jurisdiction in 1859. Albert Pike was initiated as an Entered Apprentice in July 1850, passed to FC later the same month, and was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in August 1850, all in Western Star Lodge #2 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He demitted from Western Star on 11/2/1852, and two days later was listed as a charter member of Magnolia Lodge #60, also in Little Rock. When the lodge was chartered on St John the Evangelist's Day in 1852, Pike was elected as its first Master. Pike moved his law practice to New Orleans in 1858, and so demitted to Marion Lodge #68 in New Orleans, LA, and subsequently to Kilwenning #341 in Memphis TN in 1860, then to Pentalpha #23 in Washington DC in October 1880. On January 1, 1883, he demitted from Pentalpha and re-affiliated with his home lodge, Magnolia #60 in Little Rock, where he remained a member until his death in 1891. Pike served on a number of committees with the Grand Lodge of Arkansas in 1853 and 1854, but the only Grand Lodge office he held was that of Grand Orator in 1864. He did serve as Grand High Priest for the Arkansas Grand Chapter in Royal Arch Masonry for two years, 1853 and 1854, as well as EHP of Union Chapter #2, Thrice Illustious Master of Occidental Council #1 and Eminent Commander of Hugh de Payens Commandery #1, all in Little Rock, during the same time frame. After receiving the Scottish Rite degrees in March 1853, Pike devoted the majority of his energies to the Scottish Rite and was pretty much a card-carrying member in his blue lodges. ------------- Tom Ezell Adoniram #288, F&AM Mablevale, AR |
